Criminal Justice: Prison Riots

For more than 152 years, the American Correctional Association has championed the cause of corrections and correctional effectiveness. Founded in 1870 as the National Prison Association, ACA is the oldest association developed specifically for practitioners in the correctional profession. During the first organizational meeting in Cincinnati, Ohio, the assembly elected then-Ohio Governor and future President Rutherford B. Hayes as the first President of the Association.

RTA helps people in prison develop critical life skills through the arts, modeling an approach to the justice system based on human dignity rather than punishment.

The mission of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is to enforce the controlled substances laws and regulations of the United States and bring to the criminal and civil justice system of the United States, or any other competent jurisdiction, those organizations and principal members of organizations, involved in the growing, manufacture, or distribution of controlled substances appearing in or destined for illicit traffic in the United States; and to recommend and support non-enforcement programs aimed at reducing the availability of illicit controlled substances on the domestic and international markets.

Lucasville, is commemorating the 30th anniversary of the deadly riot at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility (SOCF) that resulted in the deaths of 10 people, including a corrections officer. The 11-day riot, which began on April 11, 1993, remains one of the most violent and prolonged prison uprisings in U.S. history.

Three decades later, the pain still lingers at Lucasville. You could see it in the wreath-laying ceremony. And the 21-gun salute. And the solemn words that marked 30 years since the start of what remains the nation’s longest prison riot.

It can't possibly be that 30 years have passed since that Easter Sunday when death and destruction took hold at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility near Lucasville, setting off the longest prison riot in American history.
